Paintings
A selection of paintings made to commission and for our studio gallery. Working as a multimedia artist I love the diverse effects and properties that different paints give me. From the instant fluidity of watercolour and ink, the versatility and durability of acrylics, to the beautiful slow drying qualities of oil paints, which enable blending and manipulation over several days, they all have their own individual and valuable characteristics.
At present, you can find a selection of my paintings available for sale at The Colour Factory Gallery in Winchester. If you wish to commission a bespoke painting, please get in touch by clicking here. Details useful for starting the process include the subject matter and the size of the painting that you wish to have.
I started painting my little birds during lockdown in 2020. During a time that saw so much uncertainty, and when it seemed no-one was sure what we were actually allowed to do, I started to tentatively drift back into the studio.
Like most of us during that time, our wild birds gave us a lot of pleasure, their song seemed louder and more beautiful than usual and we had the time to notice and appreciate them more. Maybe we loved them all the more because they had the freedom that had suddenly been denied to us.
It started with a blackbird, singing his little heart out in my garden, and painting them became a kind of therapy for me. Working on such a small scale, in fact, some of them pretty much life size, meant that I could quietly sit and finish a little bird before returning home to my 'bubble'. I couldn't wait to get back to the studio to paint another, it became almost obsessive and many more have appeared since.
These little birds are painted in oils onto gold or silver leaf, on canvas board. Most of them have now flown off to new homes, but I am always very happy to take commissions; don't we all have a favourite! They also make a wonderful gift for the bird lover in your life.
